Getting Motivated as a Highly Sensitive Person

Hi, Highly Sensitive Person -

A lot of people have a common misconception:

"The reason I'm not doing something is because I lack motivation."

"I just need more motivation!"

"I wish I could be more motivated..."

Any of these sound familiar?

Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) in particular have such vivid inner worlds that we sometimes have a bit of magical thinking about progress and solutions.

But you can take a ton of action and make absolutely zero progress.

The number one thing keeping you from feeling motivated is your thoughts about doing the action you want to take.

If you want to get out of bed earlier, take a hip hop class, write a book, learn Italian, or any of the other goals and dreams you have, it's going to be tough to do that when your mindset sounds like this:

"I don't know how."

"I'm waiting for a sign."

"I'll do that when the timing is right."

"I can't right now."

Of COURSE you're not taking action when you have these thoughts.

They're making you feel confused, passive, defeated, and resistant.

But when you try on new thoughts, it gets easier to take action AND make progress:

"I'm learning how to do this."

"It's okay to make mistakes along the way."

"I can figure this out."

"I'm someone who does hard things like this."

Feel the difference?

After you have your thoughtful, sensitive brain in the right zone, it opens you up to take real action.

Taking action actually comes down to three things:

1. Your willingness to practice new, more helpful thoughts as often as you can.

2. Figuring out what kind of motivation style works for you.

3. Taking steps regularly and consistently, no matter how small.

And to do that, it REALLY helps to know your motivational style.

Which is why, in this week's episode of the Highly Sensitive Club, I talk about your high sensitivity and a handy motivational framework called the Four Tendencies - created by Gretchen Rubin.

The Four Tendencies shows you how to use your motivational style to your advantage so you know exactly what techniques help you feel motivated.

Listen on your favorite podcast app and / or watch on YouTube.

In the episode, you'll learn:

  • The four motivational types (internal, external, both, or neither)

  • What each type looks like for HSPs

  • The pros and cons of each type

  • How to use your type to your advantage - and get sh*t done!

I love this framework because you can stop getting in your own way and lean into your unique gifts.

What's your type? Comment below, and let me know when you listen to the episode.

Big, warm vibes -

Steph

P.S. I'm doing something very authentic for where I am right now -

I'm having a soft, gentle launch for the next live round of Emotional Alchemy, which I'm running live from Wednesday, August 21, 2024 to Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

I don't love launching, but I freaking love this program.

It even surprised me by how effective the first round was.

It's happening in 2 weeks.

Do your emotions feel overwhelming, scary, or too intense?

In this 6 week course, I'll teach you what you need to know to lower your anxiety, handle stress better, and control your own emotions again.

Early bird pricing ends Tuesday, August 13, 2024 @ 11:59pm ET.
